Wallpaper calculator

Wallpaper hangs in vertical strips off a fixed-width roll, and a patterned strip has to be cut to a whole repeat. This counts the rolls by the drop — with the pattern-repeat waste that makes an area estimate come up short.

01 How the math works

There are two ways to count wallpaper, and they disagree. The flat way is the one most calculators use: take the wall area, add a waste percentage, divide by the roll's area. Simple, and wrong often enough to matter.

The way paper actually hangs is by the drop. A drop is one vertical strip, the full width of the roll, run floor to ceiling. You cut each drop to the wall height plus a little trim, and on a patterned paper you cut it up to a whole number of pattern repeats so the design lines up with the drop beside it. Then you count how many of those drops come off one roll — the roll length divided by the cut length, rounded down. The leftover at the end of the roll is too short for another full drop, so it is waste.

Flat-area method: rolls = ceil( run × height × (1 + waste) ÷ roll area )
Drop method: drop length = ceil( (height + trim) ÷ repeat ) × repeat
drops needed = ceil( wall run ÷ roll width )
drops per roll = floor( roll length ÷ drop length )
rolls = ceil( drops needed ÷ drops per roll )

The European-standard roll is 0.53 m × 10.05 m, sold as 5.3 m² — about 20.87 in wide and 32.97 ft long. US paper is usually put up as a double roll, 27 in × 27 ft (about 60.75 ft²). What you can hang off either depends on the pattern, and the pattern is rarely on your side.

02 Worked example

Take a 12 ft × 14 ft bedroom (3.66 m × 4.27 m) with a 9 ft (2.74 m) ceiling, papered on all four walls in a straight-match print with a 21 in (533.4 mm) repeat, off the Euro roll. The perimeter is 52 ft (15.85 m). Openings are not deducted — you paper past a door or window and trim the cut-out from the same drop.

Drops needed: 52 ft ÷ 20.87 in roll width = 30 drops. Each drop is the 9 ft height plus 4 in of trim = 112 in, rounded up to a whole number of 21 in repeats — ceil(112 ÷ 21) = 6 repeats = 126 in (10.5 ft / 3.20 m) of strip. Drops per roll: 32.97 ft ÷ 10.5 ft, rounded down = 3. Rolls: ceil(30 ÷ 3) = 10.

The flat-area method takes the 468 ft² (43.48 m²) of wall, divides by the 57.33 ft² (5.33 m²) roll, and gets 8.16 → 9 rolls before any waste factor. A 10% factor still rounds to 9. The drop method says 10. That one-roll gap is the strip you throw away three times a roll — the remainder after each set of drops — and a flat percentage never sees it.

03 When this calculator is wrong

The real problem with the flat waste factor is not that it is a little low. It is that it models the wrong thing. Wallpaper waste is not a smooth percentage; it is quantized by how many whole drops come off a roll. Once a roll gives 3 drops, the fourth drop needs a fresh roll no matter how little of the third roll you used. A flat 10–15% is calibrated for production-scale work on simple, plain material — for a single papered room in a patterned print, the length left over after whole drops runs anywhere from 15% to 40% of every roll, depending on the repeat and the ceiling height. The exception is a plain, random-match paper on a low wall, where drops-per-roll is high and the remainder is small; there the flat factor is generous.

What makes this concrete is how fast the count jumps. Keep the same room but raise the ceiling to 10 ft 6 in (3.20 m). Now each drop is 126 in of wall plus trim, still rounded to a whole 21 in repeat, which pushes the cut to 147 in (12.25 ft). Drops per roll fall from 3 to 2. The same 30 drops now take 15 rolls, not 10 — a 50% jump from 18 inches of extra ceiling, and nothing a percentage would have warned you about.

04 What to do with the result

Order the drop-method count, plus one spare roll, and get every roll from the same batch. Wallpaper carries a batch number — the dye lot or shade run — and two batches of the same pattern can differ enough in color to show at a seam. The label usually says to hang in numerical order for exactly this reason. Buying the spare now, in the batch, costs the price of a roll. Running one drop short and reordering into a new batch costs a wall that doesn't match, which you live with until you strip it.

So when the drop method and the flat-area method disagree, trust the drop method — it is the one that knows paper comes off a fixed roll in whole repeats. Give the number, the pattern's repeat, and the batch to whoever hangs it, and confirm the roll's printed dimensions before the order goes in. A shorter repeat or a longer roll can turn a 10-roll room into an 8-roll one, and that is worth checking before you buy.

How many rolls of wallpaper do I need for a 12×14 room?
With a 9 ft ceiling and a 21 in straight-match repeat off the Euro roll, 10 rolls — 30 drops at 3 drops per roll. A flat-area estimate would call for 9, one short, because it can't see the strip wasted at the end of each roll.
How do I calculate wallpaper with a pattern repeat?
