Vinyl plank calculator
Cartons of LVP for a room, plus the two numbers a floating floor forces and most calculators skip: the perimeter expansion gap, and the T-molding transitions your run length triggers. A long room can need a transition down the middle whether you planned one or not.
01 How the math works
Vinyl plank is a coverage problem sold in whole cartons. Take the floor area, add a waste factor for cuts and defects, and divide by what one carton covers — rounding up, because a carton opened for two planks still counts as bought. That part is the same as any flooring order.

What makes a floating LVP floor different is that it isn't fastened down. It clicks together and moves as one sheet with temperature. Two things follow from that, and both change what you buy.
First, a gap at the edge. The floor needs room to expand at every wall, cabinet, post, and pipe — 1/4 in (6.35 mm) for a floor under 2,500 ft², and 1/2 in (12.7 mm) at or above that, per the COREtec install guide. It hides under the baseboard, so it costs nothing but the discipline to leave it.
Second, the field-size limit. A floating field can only run so far before it has to be split with a T-molding — a transition that sits over a gap and lets the two sides move independently. The limit is set by the product, not the room, and it's shorter than most people expect.

That's the number no area-times-percentage calculator surfaces. A room can be well inside the carton math and still need a transition strip down the middle of it.
02 Worked example
Take an open-plan living/dining area, 44 ft × 18 ft (13.41 m × 5.49 m), floating rigid-core LVP, two doorways off the space. The floor is 792 ft² (73.58 m²). At the NWFA straight-install waste of 5%, that's 831.6 ft² (77.26 m²), and at a 24 ft² carton (2.23 m²) the order is 35 cartons. Ordinary so far.
Now the run. The 44 ft length is past the 30 linear ft (9.14 m) continuous-run limit a rigid-core line like MSI Everlife sets before the field has to be broken. So this floor needs one T-molding control joint across the 18 ft width. Transition molding comes in 94 in (2.39 m) stock, and an 18 ft span is 216 in — that's ceil(216 ÷ 94) = 3 strips for the one joint.
Add a transition at each of the two doorways and the floor needs 5 transition strips the carton count never mentioned. Note which number tripped it: the floor is 792 ft², under the 900 ft² area limit, so it was the 44 ft run — not the square footage — that forced the joint. Rooms that read as "small enough" by area still cross the line on length.
03 When this calculator is wrong
The field-size limit is product-specific, and using the wrong one is how a floor buckles or gaps a season later. Most calculators don't ask for it at all. This one defaults to 30 ft because that's the tightest common limit (MSI Everlife / Hybrid Rigid Core), but the governing number is the one printed in your product's own install guide, and it can be very different: the COREtec guide, for one, only requires a within-floor expansion space once a floor exceeds 80 ft (24.38 m) in a direction or 6,400 ft² (594.58 m²). Read the box, then set the run limit to match — and never assume a floor that fits one product's limit fits another's.
- Glue-down LVP doesn't float, so it isn't in this math. Fully-adhered vinyl plank moves with the subfloor, not as a sheet, so the continuous-run limit and the mid-floor T-molding don't apply. If your product is glue-down, use the carton count and the perimeter gap and skip the transition rows.
- The gap has to be held everywhere, not just at walls. The 1/4 in (6.35 mm) expansion gap belongs at every fixed object the floor meets — cabinet toe-kicks, islands, posts, door jambs, pipe collars. A floor pinned at a single toe-kick can push a seam open ten feet away, and the calculator can't see what the floor is butted against.
- A doorway usually needs a transition even when the run is short. The doorway count here assumes one transition per opening onto another floor, because a floating floor should break at a doorway rather than run continuously into the next room's field. If two rooms are genuinely one uninterrupted field, drop the count; if a doorway is wider than the 94 in stock, it takes more than one strip.
- Transition strips fasten to a track, never to the floor. The stem sits in a track screwed to the subfloor, or the molding nails to the baseboard — so the floor still moves underneath. Fastening a transition through the planks defeats the joint it's covering. That's an install note, not a quantity, but it's the reason the joint exists.
04 What to do with the result
Order the rounded-up carton count in one order, from one production run — LVP is printed in batches and colour drifts between them, so a second order weeks later can land a shade off. Keep one carton back as attic stock for repairs. Then buy the transition strips as a separate line: count the mid-floor T-mold joints the run length forces, add one transition per doorway, and round each joint's span up to whole 94 in (2.39 m) sticks. A multi-function "3-in-1" molding covers T-mold, reducer, and end-cap duty, which simplifies the order when doorways meet floors of different heights.
Before the first plank goes down, set your run limit to your actual product's number and read the transition rows against your layout. If the longest run clears the limit with no joint, you only need the doorway strips. If it doesn't, plan where the T-molding lands — a doorway or a natural sightline break — rather than letting it fall mid-room where the run happens to run out.
05 Common questions
- How much vinyl plank flooring do I need for a room?
- Measure the floor area, add a waste factor — 5% for a straight run, 10% for a diagonal or a room with angled walls — and divide by the carton coverage, rounding up to whole cartons. A 792 ft² floor at 5% and a 24 ft² carton is 35 cartons. Coverage varies by product — commonly 18–24 ft² (1.67–2.23 m²) per carton — so read the box.
- Do I need a transition strip in the middle of a large room?
- For floating LVP, sometimes yes. A floating field can only run so far before it must be broken with a T-molding control joint. The limit is set by the manufacturer — as tight as 30 linear ft (9.14 m) or 900 ft² on a rigid-core line like MSI Everlife, and as loose as 80 ft (24.38 m) or 6,400 ft² on COREtec. Check your product's install guide; a run past its limit needs a T-mold whether or not there's a doorway there.
- How big should the expansion gap be for vinyl plank?
- For floating rigid-core LVP the perimeter gap is commonly 1/4 in (6.35 mm) for a floor under 2,500 ft² and 1/2 in (12.7 mm) at or above that, per the COREtec guide; some lines call for 5/16 in (7.94 mm). Hold it at every wall and fixed object and hide it under the baseboard.
- How long is a vinyl plank transition strip?
- The common stock length is 94 in (2,387.6 mm / 2.39 m) for T-molding, reducers, and end caps. Many are sold as a multi-function "3-in-1" strip that does all three jobs. A joint or doorway wider than one stick takes more than one strip.
- Is glue-down vinyl plank different?
- Yes. Glue-down LVP is fully adhered, so it moves with the subfloor rather than as a floating sheet. The continuous-run limit and the mid-floor T-molding don't apply, and the perimeter gap requirement is smaller or absent.
