01 How the math works

Thinset covers the substrate, so the amount scales with the tiled area, not with the tile count. Bags is the area divided by how many square feet one bag spreads, then rounded up. The figure that moves is the coverage, and the coverage is set by the trowel.

Bags = area ÷ coverage per bag
Order = round up (area × (1 + waste) ÷ coverage per bag)
Wet bed depth ≈ notch depth ÷ 2

A square-notch trowel lays ridges of mortar as tall as the notch is deep. When the tile is beaten in, those ridges collapse into the gaps and average out to a bed about half the notch depth. So a 1/2 in notch leaves roughly twice the mortar of a 1/4 in notch, and a 50 lb bag covers about half as much floor. The bag covers a number the bag has no say in; the trowel does. LATICRETE's 254 Platinum data sheet puts a 1/4 × 1/4 in notch at 80–95 ft² per 50 lb bag, a 1/4 × 3/8 in notch at 60–70 ft², and a 1/2 × 1/2 in notch at 40–45 ft².

02 Worked example

Take a bathroom floor: 6 ft × 8 ft (1.83 m × 2.44 m), 48 ft² (4.46 m²), in 12 × 12 in (305 × 305 mm) tile.

A 12 in tile sits in the 8–16 in range, so the notch is a 1/4 × 3/8 in square — 60 ft² (5.57 m²) per 50 lb bag at the conservative end. The math: 48 × 1.10 ÷ 60 = 0.88, rounded up to 1 bag.

Re-tile the same floor in an 18 × 18 in (457 × 457 mm) large-format tile and the notch steps up to a 1/2 × 1/2 in square at 40 ft² (3.72 m²) per bag. Now it is 48 × 1.10 ÷ 40 = 1.322 bags. Same floor, same area, double the thin-set — because the bigger tile needs a deeper notch.

03 When this calculator is wrong

Area ÷ coverage is the floor of what you need, not the ceiling. Two things routinely push the real number up, and both are specific.

04 What to do with the result

Match the notch to the tile first: 1/4 × 1/4 in for mosaic and tile up to about 8 in, 1/4 × 3/8 in for the 8–16 in middle, 1/2 × 1/2 in and a medium-bed mortar for anything 15 in or larger. Then take the low-end coverage, apply the waste factor, and round up to the whole bag — the order figure above already does this.

For a shower, a floor that gets wet, or any large-format tile, plan on back-buttering and buy on the high side of the count — the 95% coverage rule is not optional there, and thin-set has a pot life of an hour or so once mixed, which is not the moment to send someone back to the store. An unopened bag keeps; a half-set batch does not.

05 Common questions

How much thinset do I need for 100 square feet?
It depends on the notch. At a 1/4 × 3/8 in notch (60 ft² per 50 lb bag) that is 100 × 1.10 ÷ 60 = 2 bags. At a 1/2 × 1/2 in notch (40 ft² per bag) it is 3 bags. Set the notch to your tile size before you trust a single number.
What size trowel do I use for 12x12 tile?
A 1/4 × 3/8 in square-notch trowel is the common call for tile in the 8–16 in range, which includes 12 × 12. Step up to a 1/2 × 1/2 in notch and a medium-bed mortar once any tile edge reaches 15 in.
How many square feet does a 50 lb bag of thinset cover?
Between 80–95 ft² at a 1/4 × 1/4 in notch and 40–45 ft² at a 1/2 × 1/2 in notch, per the LATICRETE 254 Platinum data sheet. The bag weight is fixed at 50 lb; it is the notch that sets how far it goes.
Do I need to back-butter the tile?
For tile 15 in or larger, and for anything in a shower, on a wet floor, or outdoors, yes. ANSI A108.5 wants at least 95% mortar contact in those spots, and back-buttering is how you get there. It roughly doubles the mortar over troweling the substrate alone, so buy accordingly.
Does the waste factor apply to thinset?
A small one. Unlike tile, thin-set is not cut, so there is no offcut waste — but some is left on the mixing paddle, in the bucket, and in ridges scraped off and retooled. A 10% allowance covers it. The bigger swing is the notch and the coverage-minimum rule above, not the waste percentage.
