How many studs a wall takes at 12, 16, or 24 in on-center — all three spacings side by side, with the closing end stud and the corner and partition backing that bare division drops.
01 How the math works
A wall run is a fence-post problem. Divide the length by the on-center spacing to get the number of bays, then add one for the stud that closes the far end. That closing stud is the piece a plain length ÷ spacing drops, and it drops it on every wall.
studs = bays + 1
Everything is in one small unit inside the math: inches in imperial, millimetres in metric. A wall that doesn't divide evenly still gets a full stud for the short final bay, which is why the bay count rounds up. Corners and partition intersections then add backing studs on top — the layout count alone won't frame them.
02 Worked example
Take an interior partition 12 ft long (3.66 m), framed 16 in (406 mm) on-center. Bays: 12 × 12 ÷ 16 = 9. Studs: 9 + 1 = 10. That is the whole field count for the wall.
Change nothing but the spacing and the count moves fast. At 12 in oc the same wall is 13 studs; at 24 in oc it is 7 studs. Tightening from 16 to 12 in oc adds three studs to a single 12 ft wall; opening up to 24 in oc drops three. The count tracks 1 ÷ spacing, not the wall length, so the spacing choice is the lever, not the wall.
Add one framed corner and one partition backing into this wall and that is four more studs — two per joint — before any waste. Ten field studs plus four backing is 14; at a 10% waste factor, rounded up, that is 16 studs to buy for the run.
03 When this calculator is wrong
This is a straight-run field count. It answers "how many studs stand up along this wall," and it is honest about the closing stud and the backing. What it does not do is frame your openings or your layout quirks:
- Openings change the count, and this tool doesn't itemize them. A door or window removes some field studs but adds two king and two jack studs plus cripples and a header — the net is more studs, not fewer. - Backing is two studs per joint by convention, not by rule. A three-stud corner or ladder-back partition adds two studs each; a two-stud corner with drywall clips adds one or none. The detail is the framer's call — the IRC governs the wall, not the backing method — so adjust if you know your corner detail.
- Metric spacing is the rounded field mark, so counts can differ by one. Framers lay out to 305/406/610 mm, not the exact 304.8/406.4/609.6 mm conversion of 12/16/24 in. On the same physical wall the metric count can land one stud off the imperial count. That's real, not a bug — it's what happens when you snap to a round metric line.
- The spacing has to be allowed for the wall. Whether 24 in oc is legal for a given stud size, height, and load is set by IRC Table R602.3(5) and local code, not by this count. The calculator will happily space a load-bearing wall at 24 in; the code may not.
04 What to do with the result
The field count is the floor, not the order. Order more than the math gives, never less: add the two-per-joint backing for every corner and partition, then round up for waste, because a bowed or split stud gets culled at the pile and framing lumber is cheap to over-buy and slow to run back for. The exception is items sold in matching lots — studs aren't one, so round up freely. Buy the "studs to buy" figure, in bundled counts if your yard sells that way, and keep the spares for blocking.

- How many studs do I need for a 12 foot wall?
- At 16 in on-center, 10 studs — nine bays plus the closing end stud. At 12 in oc it's 13; at 24 in oc it's 7. Add two studs for each corner and each partition that ties into the wall.
- What's the formula for stud count?
- Bays are the wall length divided by the spacing, rounded up: ceil(length ÷ spacing). Studs are the bays plus one. The "plus one" is the stud at the far end of the wall, which straight division leaves out.
- Is 16 or 24 inch stud spacing better?
- 16 in oc is the residential default and is required where load or finish calls for it; 24 in oc is permitted for many walls and uses about 30% fewer studs. Which one is allowed for your wall size, height, and load is set by IRC Table R602.3(5) and local code — check that before you choose on stud count alone.
- Do I count a stud at both ends of the wall?
- Yes. A wall has one more stud than it has bays, so both ends carry a stud. That's the whole reason the count is bays plus one and not just length divided by spacing.
- How many studs are in a corner?
- A standard three-stud corner adds two studs beyond the regular layout to back the drywall and tie the walls together; a T-intersection where a partition meets the wall adds two the same way. Two-stud corners with drywall clips use fewer. This calculator adds two per joint by default.
