Stucco coverage calculator
Bags of base coat and finish coat for a stucco wall, with each coat sized to its own ASTM C926 thickness — and the base coat counted for both the scratch and the brown lift, which is where most stucco estimates come up short.
01 How the math works
Stucco is priced by the bag, but it is placed by the coat. Start with the net wall area: length × height, minus the doors and windows. Then size each coat to its own thickness and turn area into bags with the manufacturer's coverage-per-bag figure.
A three-coat system over metal lath is 7/8 in (22.2 mm) of plaster in three passes: a 3/8 in scratch coat, a 3/8 in brown coat, and a 1/8 in finish coat — the nominal thicknesses set by ASTM C926 and carried into IRC R703.7.1. A two-coat system over solid masonry is 1/2 in: one 3/8 in base coat plus the 1/8 in finish. The scratch and brown coats use the same base-coat product, so the base-coat coverage is spent once per lift.

Base coat covers 20–24 ft² (1.86–2.23 m²) per 80 lb bag at 3/8 in; finish coat covers about 70 ft² (6.50 m²) per 80 lb bag at 1/8 in. The calculator orders base coat at the low end of that range, because coverage over rough lath lands there once fall-off is counted.
02 Worked example
Take a plain exterior wall: 30 ft × 9 ft (9.14 m × 2.74 m), so 270 ft² (25.08 m²) gross. Deduct one 3×7 ft door and two 3×4 ft windows — 45 ft² (4.18 m²) of openings — and the net is 225 ft² (20.90 m²). Three-coat over lath.
Plaster volume at the full 7/8 in: 16.41 ft³ (0.46 m³). Base coat is two lifts, so the 3/8-in coverage is spent twice: 225 ft² × 1.10 × 2 ÷ 20 = 24.75, rounded up to 25 bags. Finish coat is one lift: 225 ft² × 1.10 ÷ 70 = 3.54, rounded up to 4 bags. That is 25 bags of base and 4 of finish — 29 bags in all.
Run the same wall through a calculator that treats the base coat as a single 3/8-in pass and it returns about 13 base-coat bags. That is the scratch coat with no brown, which is not a wall you can finish.
03 When this calculator is wrong
The result uses a flat 10% waste factor, which holds for machine or hand application on large, regular walls. On small hand-troweled jobs and heavy textures the real waste runs higher, because material falls off the hawk and trowel and keys into the lath instead of building thickness. That is opinion O1 on this site: the standard 10% is calibrated for production-scale work on simple geometry, and small stucco jobs sit closer to 15–20%. The exception is a large, flat, machine-applied wall, where 10% is right and sometimes generous.
- Coverage is a smooth-substrate figure. The 20–24 ft²/bag base-coat range assumes an even 3/8 in lift. Over open metal lath the scratch coat has to fill the keys behind the mesh before it builds face thickness, which pushes effective coverage to the low end or below. The calculator already orders at 20 ft²/bag for this reason; textured or three-dimensional lath needs more.
- It sizes coats to nominal ASTM thickness, not what is on the wall. Nominal 3/8 in coats are commonly built a hair thicker to bury the lath and true a wavy substrate. Every 1/16 in of extra base thickness is roughly 17% more base material than the 3/8 in the calculator assumes.
- Finish-coat coverage swings with texture. A smooth or fine sand finish runs near the 70 ft²/bag figure; a heavy dash or lace finish is thicker and can drop finish coverage by a third. Buy the finish coat by the same dye lot if colour is integral — a re-order rarely matches.
- It does not add lath, corner bead, or weep screed. This is a plaster-quantity calculator, not a full wall system. Metal lath, self-furring nails, casing bead, and weep screed at the base are separate line items sized off the wall perimeter and area.
04 What to do with the result
Order the base coat and finish coat as two separate line items — they are different products (Quikrete No. 1139 base, No. 1201 finish, or the equivalent). Buy the base coat to the rounded-up number here; it is the coat that runs short, and a wall that sets between the scratch and brown lifts is a cold joint you can see. Finish coat is more forgiving on quantity but less forgiving on colour, so keep it to one dye lot and mix full bags for consistency. If you are going over solid masonry, switch the system toggle to two-coat before ordering — it drops the base coat from two lifts to one and roughly halves the base-coat bags.
05 Common questions
- How many bags of stucco do I need per square foot?
- For a three-coat lath wall, budget about one 80 lb base-coat bag per 10 ft² of wall (two 3/8-in lifts at 20 ft²/bag each) plus one finish-coat bag per 70 ft². A 225 ft² wall works out to 25 base and 4 finish with 10% waste.
- What is the difference between the scratch coat and the brown coat?
- Both are the same base-coat product applied at 3/8 in. The scratch coat is the first lift, keyed into the lath and raked so the next coat bonds; the brown coat is the second lift, floated flat to true the wall for the finish. Two lifts of base means the base-coat coverage is used twice — the point this calculator is built around.
- How thick should stucco be?
- ASTM C926 sets the nominal totals: 7/8 in (22.2 mm) three-coat over metal lath, 1/2 in (12.7 mm) two-coat over unit masonry, and 3/8 in (9.5 mm) two-coat over cast concrete. Lath work is thicker because the plaster has to build out from the mesh, not off a solid wall.
- Can I use a two-coat system on a wood-framed wall?
- No. Two-coat work is for solid plaster bases — concrete or unit masonry. A framed wall needs a metal-lath base and the full three-coat, 7/8 in build. The toggle enforces this: pick two-coat only when you are plastering directly over masonry or concrete.
- How much water does base-coat stucco need?
- Follow the bag — mixing water is set by the product, not by this calculator, and over-watering weakens the coat and worsens fall-off. The coverage figures here assume the manufacturer's specified consistency.
