Drywall mud calculator
How much joint compound a taping-and-finishing job takes — in gallons of all-purpose ready-mix or pounds of setting-type powder — and how many buckets or bags that is. The two kinds of mud aren't measured the same way, and most calculators quote only one.
01 How the math works
Mud is estimated per square foot of board you finish, not per foot of joint. The rate already folds in the usual joint and fastener density, so the one input that matters is the drywall area you're taping and coating.
The manufacturer estimating figure for a standard three-coat finish — embed the tape, a fill coat, then a finish coat, which is a GA-214 Level 4 result — is about 10 gallons of all-purpose ready-mix per 1,000 ft² of board, or about 52 lb of setting-type powder for the same area. One 4.5 gal ready-mix carton covers roughly 450 ft²; setting-type powder comes in 18 lb bags.
Setting-type (lb) = area (ft²) × 52 ÷ 1,000
Cartons = round up ( gal ÷ 4.5 )
Bags = round up ( lb ÷ 18 )
The two numbers describe the same wall. Ready-mix is measured wet, by volume, because it's sold with its water already in the bucket. Setting-type is measured dry, by the weight of powder you add water to on site. That's why a mud calculator that reports one figure in gallons can't tell you how many bags of the other to buy.
02 Worked example
Take a single-room hang: a 12 ft × 14 ft bedroom with 8 ft walls, drywall on the walls and ceiling. After a door and one window, that's about 551 ft² (51.2 m²) of board to finish.
At the 10 gal / 1,000 ft² rate, that's 5.51 gal (20.86 L) of all-purpose ready-mix — two 4.5 gal cartons. In setting-type powder it works out to 28.7 lb (13.0 kg), which is two 18 lb bags. Adding a 10% waste factor doesn't change either count on a job this size; on a whole-house hang it does.
03 When this calculator is wrong
The figure above is for a standard three-coat Level 4 finish. Four things shift it, and none of them show up in a single coverage number.
- All-purpose is a compromise between two specialty muds. Finishers often run a taping compound for the embed and first coat — it's harder and grips the tape with the most bond and crack resistance — then switch to a topping compound for the last two coats, which is softer, lower-shrink, and sands easily. All-purpose does all three jobs from one bucket at some cost to each. The coverage rate is about the same either way; what changes is the finish, not the amount. So the gallons here hold whether you buy one all-purpose bucket or split the job taping-then-topping.
- Setting-type doesn't shrink, and it can't wait. Drying-type mud loses volume as its water leaves, which is part of why it takes three coats. Chemical-set "hot mud" cures without shrinking and can finish in fewer. But a bag mixed for a 20-minute set turns to rock in twenty minutes whether or not the wall is ready, so it's mixed in small batches and the leftover is a loss. Weigh the powder; don't read it off a volume figure.
- A Level 5 finish coats the whole wall, not the joints. Level 4 finishes only the joints, angles, and fasteners — the field of the board stays bare. Level 5 adds a skim coat over 100% of the surface for gloss paint or raking light. That skim is a full extra surface coat, so a room taken to Level 5 needs materially more compound than this joints-only figure.
- Dust is part of the finishing math. Sanding drying-type compound throws fine gypsum dust, which carries the respirable crystalline silica the OSHA silica rule (29 CFR 1926.1153) tracks. Dust-control ready-mix binds the residue into heavier particles that drop instead of hanging in the air; setting-type sands hard, so it's often sponged smooth instead of sanded. The product you pick changes how much you sand and re-coat.
04 What to do with the result
Buy by the container and round up. When a job lands mid-carton — like the 5.51 gal example, two cartons for a one-room hang — the second one isn't optional. Mud that skins over in the pail or a bag that sets mid-wall can't be topped up from a can you didn't buy.
On small patch and repair work under a few hundred square feet, treat the 10% waste factor as 15–20% instead. You can't scrape a pan or a pail clean, and a hot-mud batch sets before the last of it is on the wall, so the real loss on small jobs runs higher than the production figure. The exception is a big hang on long, straight runs, where 10% is generous. And if you're finishing to Level 5, buy for the skim coat on top of this number — a full pass over every square foot, not just the joints.
05 Common questions
- How much joint compound do I need per sheet of drywall?
- A 4×8 sheet is 32 ft². At 10 gal / 1,000 ft² that's about 0.32 gal of ready-mix per sheet for a three-coat finish, so one 4.5 gal carton finishes roughly 14 sheets. In setting-type powder it's about 1.7 lb per sheet.
- What's the difference between all-purpose, taping, and topping compound?
- Taping compound is the strongest and grips tape best — it's for embedding tape and the first coat. Topping is the softest and lowest-shrink, for the final coats, and it sands with the least effort. All-purpose does both jobs from one bucket at some cost to each. Setting-type is a separate powder that cures chemically instead of drying.
- How many coats of mud does drywall need?
- A standard Level 4 finish is three coats over drying-type compound: embed the tape, a fill coat, and a finish coat, each sanded or wiped between. Setting-type doesn't shrink, so it can sometimes get there in fewer. A Level 5 finish adds a skim coat over the entire surface.
- Is setting-type (hot mud) better than premixed?
- It's stronger, doesn't shrink, and sets fast enough to recoat the same day, which is why it's used for first coats and patches. It's harder to sand and unforgiving of a slow hand, since the batch sets on schedule no matter what. Ready-mix is easier to spread and sand. Plenty of jobs use both.
