Concrete curing time

Concrete sets in hours and cures for weeks. The number people want — "when can I use it" — is really a strength question, so here is the strength at each age for your mix, and the reason 28 days is a testing date, not a deadline.

01 How the math works

Concrete gains strength on a curve that is steep early and long in the tail. The standard way to model it is the ACI 209R-92 equation, which gives the compressive strength at age t days as a fraction of the 28-day design strength:

f'c(t) = [ t / (a + β·t) ] × f'c(28)

Type I/II, moist-cured: a = 4.0, β = 0.85
Type III (high-early), moist-cured: a = 2.3, β = 0.92

Feed the equation a few day counts and the familiar chart falls out. For standard Type I/II cement, moist-cured: about 21% of design strength at 1 day, 46% at 3 days, 70% at 7 days, 88% at 14 days, and the design strength at 28. High-early Type III runs ahead of that — roughly 80% at 7 days instead of 70.

Two things the equation makes obvious. The gain per day is largest in the first week, which is why the curing rules cluster there. And the curve does not stop at 28 — the model keeps climbing, to about 112% of the 28-day value at 90 days. 28 days is the age ACI 318 tests the design strength (f'c) at, so it is the reference point, not the point where hydration ends.

02 Worked example

Take the driveway extension: 18 ft × 12 ft × 5 in (5.49 m × 3.66 m × 0.13 m), poured with a standard 4,000 psi (27.6 MPa) mix, moist-cured. Run the Type I/II curve against that design strength:

The 7-day figure is the one that matters for a driveway. At 70% the slab holds a car driven on gently, but a loaded trailer or a delivery truck waits for 28 days. The concrete does not know what day it is — it is tracking moisture and temperature, not the calendar on the wall.

03 When this calculator is wrong

The model assumes the concrete is kept moist and at a normal temperature. That assumption is doing a lot of work, and it is where most real slabs diverge from the curve.

04 What to do with the result

Treat curing as a moisture job with a 7-day minimum, not a waiting game. Keep the surface damp — wet burlap, plastic sheeting, a curing compound, or repeated soaking — for at least 7 days for a standard mix (3 days for high-early Type III), because that first week is where the curve is steepest and where lost moisture is lost strength. The exception is high-early or accelerated mixes designed to hit strength on a compressed schedule; cure those to their data sheet, which is usually shorter.

For loading the slab, use the strength, not the date: foot traffic once it is past 24–48 hours, a car driven gently at 7 days (~70%), and full or heavy loads at 28 days. Pushing any of those earlier trades a day saved now against surface scaling or cracks that do not heal — and if the weather was cold, add days to each.

How long does concrete take to cure?
Full design strength is the 28-day mark, and the minimum active curing period — keeping it moist — is 7 days for a standard Type I/II mix (3 days for high-early Type III). The concrete keeps gaining slowly for months after 28 days; 28 is just when the design strength is measured.
When can I walk on new concrete?
Generally after 24–48 hours, once it has reached roughly 15–25% of its design strength. Keep it damp for curing during that window rather than leaving it to dry.
When can I drive on a new concrete driveway?
A passenger car driven carefully is usually fine at 7 days, when a standard mix is about 70% of design strength. Wait the full 28 days before parking heavy vehicles, trailers, or delivery trucks on it.
Why is concrete strength tested at 28 days?
It is the age ACI 318 sets the specified compressive strength (f'c) against — a convention chosen because most of the early strength gain is done by then and it fits a testing schedule. It is not the end of hydration: moist-cured concrete keeps gaining, to about 112% of the 28-day value by 90 days.
Does concrete cure faster in heat?
Warmer concrete hydrates faster, so it reaches early milestones sooner — but hot, dry conditions also pull moisture out, which can leave the finished strength lower. Below about 50°F (10°C) the gain slows sharply, which is why the 7-day curing minimum is tied to that temperature.
