01 How the math works

Asphalt is estimated the way any bulk material is: area, then volume, then weight. Area is length × width for a rectangle, or π × radius² for a round pad. Multiply the area by the compacted lift depth — everything in consistent units — and that's the in-place volume. Weight is volume times the density of the mat, and because hot-mix is sold by the ton, weight is the number that leaves with the truck.

Tonnage = V × 145 lb/ft³ ÷ 2,000

The density here is 145 lb/ft³ (2,323 kg/m³), the Asphalt Institute estimating value for compacted hot-mix asphalt. Real mixes run 142–148 lb/ft³ depending on the aggregate, so the tonnage is a band, not a single exact figure. The word compacted is doing real work: this density is the finished mat, not the loose material in the truck box, so the depth you enter is the depth after rolling.

Asphalt is one of the few materials measured in three units that only agree once the density is fixed — sold by the ton, placed by the inch, delivered by the truckload. The whole job of this calculator is to make those three line up.

02 Worked example

Take a driveway resurface: a 20 ft × 40 ft driveway paved with 3 in of compacted hot-mix asphalt (6.10 m × 12.19 m × 76.2 mm). Area is 800 ft² (74.32 m²).

Compacted volume: 200 ft³ = 7.41 yd³ = 5.66 m³. At 145 lb/ft³, that's 29,000 lb = 14.5 tons (13.15 tonnes) in place. Add a 5% allowance for edge loss and material that cools before it's placed, and the order rounds up to 15.5 tons (14.0 tonnes).

The 3 in lift clears the minimum for even a coarse 3/4 in (19 mm) mix, whose 4× floor is 3.0 in (76 mm) — so the driveway can be laid in a single lift. Drop the target to 2 in with that same coarse mix and it can't: the mix would need to change or the lift would need to be split.

03 When this calculator is wrong

The tonnage above is only as good as two things the depth field alone can't tell you: whether the lift is thick enough to compact, and how far the real mix density strays from 145. Most asphalt calculators report neither.

04 What to do with the result

Order by the ton, which is how the plant quotes it, and round up to the plant's increment. Small residential loads often carry a minimum tonnage or a short-load fee, so the rounded-up figure is usually the honest floor anyway. Before you place the order, check the depth against the minimum-lift line: if it reads too thin, switch to a smaller top-size mix or plan two lifts rather than force a thin one.

Order once. Hot-mix asphalt is placed the day it's delivered — there is no returning the unused half of a load, and a second delivery repeats the haul and mobilization of the first. Get the area, the compacted depth, and the mix top size right, add the allowance, and take the whole order in one drop.

How many tons of asphalt do I need for a driveway?
Multiply area by compacted depth for the volume, then by density. A 20 ft × 40 ft driveway at 3 in is 200 ft³, and at 145 lb/ft³ that's 29,000 lb = 14.5 tons before waste. The calculator above does this for any size and adds the ordering allowance.
How much area does a ton of asphalt cover?
At 145 lb/ft³, one US ton (2,000 lb) of compacted asphalt covers about 82.76 ft² (7.69 m²) at a 2 in depth, or roughly 165 ft² at 1 in. Halve the depth and you double the coverage.
How thick should an asphalt driveway be?
A residential driveway surface is commonly 2–3 in (50–75 mm) of compacted hot-mix over a compacted aggregate base; light-commercial and parking runs 3–4 in (75–100 mm). The total section and the base depth are a subgrade-and-load question — confirm them against local practice.
How do I convert cubic yards of asphalt to tons?
One cubic yard is 27 ft³. At 145 lb/ft³ that's 3,915 lb, or about 1.96 tons per cubic yard of compacted mat. The exact figure moves with the mix density, so treat it as a close estimate rather than a fixed rate.
Is asphalt sold by the ton or the cubic yard?
By the ton, almost everywhere — it's produced hot and weighed at the plant scale. The bridge between the yardage you measure and the tonnage you pay for is the density, which is the same number this calculator already applies.
